Hong Kong Prize Winners
The Hong Kong Prize, established by property tycoon Lui Che Woo, is presented annually in three categories-sustainability; welfare betterment; and positive energy (or creating a happier and more harmonious world). Each of these awards features an annual theme that changes. Winners receive a generous prize fund of HK$20 Million- much more than what Nobel laureates receive annually-making it one of the world’s richest awards.
This year, nine Hong Kong artists made it onto the shortlist for this prestigious award – the highest number ever! Sameen Agha from Pakistan won first prize with her sculpture A Home is a Terrible Place to Love; winning both Grand and Public Vote prizes along with an additional award of HK$10,000 for her school.
Nikola Gavrilov from Hong Kong/New York earned both Young Artist of the Year and Contemporary Asian Artist of the Year awards with his painting The Last Dance. Gavrilov has become known internationally for his unique and thought-provoking art that explores modern issues.
The China Daily Hong Kong Edition again took home four awards in news reporting categories, winning best Arts and Culture News Reporting for senior reporter Kate Li Bingcun’s series on Hong Kong’s efforts to become a cultural hub. They also won one merit award for covering controversy around Dubai prince’s pledge of US$500 Million family office launch in Hong Kong; two further merit awards went to their political desk Kahon Chan and Natalie Wong who earned second-place finishes for their series about domestic national security law controversies in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Prize is open to any field of scientific research, such as Artificial Intelligence/Robotics/Life/Health sciences/New Materials/New Energy sources/Advanced Manufacturing or FinTech. It seeks to encourage scientists and researchers in these areas of scientific study, such as Artificial Intelligence/Robotics/Life/Health sciences/New Materials/New Energy sources/Advance Manufacturing or FinTech research achievements further and serve Hong Kong needs thereby contributing towards society development. Each field reward should not exceed five persons/teams each year with each winner receiving HKD 2 Million cash prize + certificate/trophy. Nomination deadline date set at November 30, 2023
