Singapore Prize – A Prize For Non-Academic History Enthusiasts
As Singapore commemorates 50 years of independence, National University of Singapore’s Department of History has unveiled the inaugural Singapore Prize – a book award worth $50k that seeks to increase understanding and interest in Singaporean history by non-academic audiences.
This year’s prize has been won by “Singapore and the Silk Road of the Sea, 1300-1800” written by archaeologist John Miksic and selected by an international four-member jury led by NUS East Asian Institute Chairman Wang Gungwu from 43 submissions.
Miksic’s book explores Singapore as an early trading hub long before Sir Stamford Raffles set foot on its shores in 1819. Archaeological digs revealed glass shards, coins, bronze bowls and pottery which suggests there was an active community here prior to British arrival in 1819. Additionally, Miksic explores early Singaporeans lives and struggles.
Contrary to many literary prizes, the Singapore Prize welcomes historical works ranging from nonfiction and fiction alike. This year’s shortlist includes works that detail an average family life as well as how an estate where someone lived has changed over time. Another work explores how Singapore philanthropists have given back to their communities over time.
In addition to awarding its annual Prize, the Department of History is organizing other commemorative initiatives for Singapore 50, such as awarding its Singapore Water Prize – honouring those who have contributed towards protecting aquatic environments within Singapore – which echoes President Lee Kuan Yew’s vision of greener Singapore and underscores resilience against an unpredictable world.
As part of this program, Earthshot Week from 6-12 November will feature special events that bring together global leaders and businesses with members of the public to examine innovative climate solutions and foster a more sustainable future for planet earth.
As part of its events, the prize ceremony will include an exhibit featuring some of Singapore’s top brands and products in food, travel, beauty and tech industries. Furthermore, this will give members of the public an opportunity to meet and engage with winners of this year’s prize.
