At Sydney Pool + Outdoor Design we take great delight in discovering nature’s extraordinary wonders – few more magnificent than its breathtaking whirlpools known as sdy pools. Created and filled by ocean waves, these whirlpools become living canvases which constantly change shape and colour depending on tides and conditions – providing us with breathtaking sights as well as a refreshing swimming experience! In this month’s issue of Sydney Pool + Outdoor Design we explore this subject further to gain more knowledge of their history.
Bondi Icebergs pool is an iconic Sydney pool that attracts swimmers of all levels to practice their swimming techniques in its tranquil, protected waters. Carved out of rock at the southern end of Bondi beach, this picturesque grotto serves as home for swim teams that train there and provides safe training waters. Australia boasts more than 100 ocean pools and harbourside swimming enclosures, many with admission fees for private ownership; others provide public swimming spaces where swimmers can relax without being subject to shark attacks or waves pounding the beach.
In the early 1900s, recreational and competitive swimmers were strongly advised to join men’s and women’s swimming clubs so as to train in a safer environment, according to author and academic Marie-Louise McDermott. She attributes this decision to the fact that few non-Indigenous people could swim well enough to minimize risks from shark attacks.
Ocean pools were constructed to offer swimmers a safe place for lap swimming while protecting them from strong waves and the threat of shark attacks. Perhaps most notable among them is Bondi Icebergs Pool; other examples can be found at Coogee and Bronte beaches as well as Maroubra Mahon Pool which features spectacular views and offers seclusion from crowds of swimmers.
These pools are increasingly becoming a favorite destination for swimmers and families to spend leisure time. But their popularity has raised concerns about water safety and created the need for greater awareness of beach hazards.
An increasing number of councils are making efforts to make their pools more sustainable by making them free or significantly cheaper, similar to libraries. One Greens councillor in Lane Cove called on his fellow councillors to assess if it would be financially feasible to make all pools free-of-charge like libraries.
