Sidney Cox had an indelible impact on hundreds of Dartmouth students both inside and outside his classes, inspiring many with his high standards for originality and integrity in writing that will long outlive him. A group of his friends has begun raising funds so as to continue this legacy and award an annual prize that best meets that standard of writing from among undergraduate students at Dartmouth.
The award recognizes journalists whose journalism illuminates some of the great issues of our time – from searching for lasting peace to advocating for improved housing, healthcare and employment opportunities for all; to advocating civil liberties and democracy while fighting discrimination of any kind. Each month a prize winner receives both a cash award and plaque designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel; nomination deadline is the last day of each month; submissions can either be for their own work or that of someone else.
