Awarded by the University of Sydney; there is either a standard entry fee of $12 for non-subscribers and special prize subscription option ($62) providing discounted entry as well as year subscription to Overland featuring four print issues, daily online magazine access and invitations to events/opportunities/giveaways! Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges before selecting their winner – they reserve this option should none meet high standard.

The Sidney Hillman Foundation awards monthly monetary prizes to journalism that advances the common good. Their prize seeks stories that expose social and economic injustice and lead to meaningful changes within society; prize judges look for discernment of an important news story, courage and resourcefulness when reporting it, as well as skillful storytelling skills when relaying its content. They are especially interested in stories that expose abuse of power or exploit vulnerable communities.

This award honors a left-leaning labor union activist who played an instrumental role in shaping the American trade union movement. Hillman worked tirelessly on workers’ rights issues across industries and was an active member of several labor organizations, such as Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and Unite Here – his efforts strengthened what became Workers United and SEIU later on. Furthermore, The Hillman Foundation offers an annual book prize awarded by its SHOT member panel with both cash prize and plaque awarded as recognition of excellence.

Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh judged over 500 entries submitted for this year’s Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, selecting Claire Aman’s story ‘Who Rattles the Night?’ which will be published in Overland magazine’s autumn issue; two runners-up will also be published online. Our judges would like to express our sincerest thanks for their hard work and dedication towards upholding the integrity of blind judging process.
